POKOTABI / Volonte
ヴォロンテ
Casual French bistro Volonte in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, pairs its signature royale, vibrant garden salads, and mains like herb-roasted Tajima Ajidori chicken with approachable glasses of wine.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set within a residential pocket of Nagaokakyo, Volonte offers a relaxed, unpretentious setting for hearty French cooking. The lunch course lets diners choose between the day's royale or a potage. Prepared in the style of a savoury Western steamed custard, the royale has won praise for its comforting, concentrated depth—ranging across the seasons from a chilled tomato base to broths enriched with shellfish. Early in the meal, a generous garden salad mounded with varied raw vegetables and bite-sized appetisers, such as fish surimi canapés, set a genuinely satisfying tone before the main course arrives.
Main dishes offer a varied selection, from roasted Tajima Ajidori chicken fragrant with a house herb blend to fresh fish brought in from Miyazu Port and roasted pork shoulder. Balanced sauces and aromatic herbs highlight each ingredient, making the food a fine match for an affordable glass of wine, a carafe, or a highball. For evening dining, an à la carte repertoire that includes house-made sausages, pâtés, and game dishes lends itself naturally to sharing around the table.
Dessert brings choices such as traditional pudding, refreshing sorbet, or a seasonal sweet plate, followed by carefully brewed coffee for a gentle finish. For those planning a relaxed meal with close company, booking a table in advance is well worth considering.
